Dubai Free Zone Business Setup: The Real Numbers (Not the Marketing Ones)

Free zones get marketed hard, and for good reason - they're genuinely the easiest, fastest way to get a UAE company off the ground, especially if you're not planning to sell directly into the local mainland market. But the advertised "AED 5,999" or "AED 11,900" packages you see everywhere are almost never the whole story, and it's worth understanding what's actually included before you commit.

What makes free zones attractive in the first place

Free zones were built specifically to pull in foreign investment, and the incentives reflect that. You get 100% business ownership, full repatriation of capital and profits, corporate tax exemptions, and zero personal income tax, on top of a setup process that's genuinely fast - often just a few days from application to license in hand, especially with zones that have gone fully digital. Many zones now offer digital-first applications, e-signatures, and rapid approvals, cutting what used to take weeks down to days.

There are dozens of free zones across Dubai, each generally built around a sector - media, tech, commodities trading, logistics, healthcare - and some, like IFZA, position themselves specifically as low-cost, fast-onboarding options for startups and solo founders. IFZA Dubai, for example, offers digital onboarding and licensing starting from around AED 11,900.

The real budget, not the headline number

Here's the thing the "starting from" ads leave out: that entry price usually covers just the license and basic incorporation, with zero visas attached. The moment you need residency for yourself or a team, the number climbs. Free Zone Company Setup Cost in 2026 typically ranges from AED 9,000 to 30,000, depending on the license type and the specific free zone, and that's before you add registration charges, Emirates ID, medical testing, and establishment cards - all of which are mandatory, not optional add-ons.

For a more realistic first-year picture: a single service license with a flexi desk typically runs AED 18,000 to 25,000, and if you're doing trading activity or need a larger visa plan, that can climb to AED 35,000–50,000 in year one. So the gap between free zone and mainland pricing isn't always as wide as the marketing suggests once visas and a real workspace enter the picture — the difference shows up more in flexibility than in raw cost.

The trade-off nobody puts in the headline

Free zone companies can't trade directly with the UAE mainland market without a local distributor or a separate mainland branch. If your business model is: international clients, remote consulting, e-commerce shipped from outside the UAE, or a holding structure for other ventures - none of that matters, and free zone is genuinely the simpler, cheaper route. But if even a portion of your revenue is going to come from Dubai-based, walk-in, or government clients, that restriction is worth thinking through before you pick a zone based purely on price.

Bottom line

Free zone makes the most sense when you want speed, 100% ownership without question, and you're not tied to serving the local UAE market directly. It's the default choice for consultants, digital businesses, and international trading companies — just budget for the real first-year number, not the ad.
